Module - 2 - Artificial Intelligence To Enhance Students' English Skills

INTRODUCTION

"Artificial intelligence to enhance students’ English skills" is a module designed to improve students' english proficiency. Ai is a powerful weapon that could revolutionize education, especially language learning, with the rapid growth of the digital era. This module focuses on ai technologies and their potential for enhancing students' proficiency in english.

We will cover a range of ai powered applications and methods that are designed to improve english language learning across different areas, such as reading comprehension, writing, speaking, listening. Ai can provide personalized learning experiences, instant feedback, and adaptive content tailored to student preferences.

This module gives a comprehensive overview of how ai can be used in english language teaching and learning, and the knowledge to evaluate and apply ai tools in educational contexts.

In conclusion, the module seems to be crafted for those interested in AI and language learning: educators who are delving into this area of study or educational technologists concerned about misunderstandings based on hype involving failed announcements.

Including ethical considerations suggests that the module will not only examine what AI can do to benefit educational settings but also address how to be critical and vigilant of potential problems associated with its use.

INITIAL THOUGHTS AND EXPECTATIONS:

My initial thoughts about this module were to know about different ways AI can be used in classroom or setting now.

In what ways can AI propose customized learning experiences based on individual student needs and how students learn; also, I wanted to know about the way of teaching or learn that makes things more efficient and/or effectively without necessarily increasing workload.

Besides, the ethical implications of AI in education such as data privacy, or even perhaps the fear that leave no room for human teachers.

How AI will impact the future of language education and what that means for the role as an educator or learner.

To know where AI stands currently in language learning, what hurdles need to be crossed.

REFLECTION ON KEY CONCEPTS:

What were the most important concepts you learned in this module?

1."AI in ELT” (Artificial Intelligence in English Language Teaching)

The terminology “AI in ELT” refers to the application of the Artificial Intelligence concept in the context of English as a Foreign Language teaching. This therefore entails integrating and applying artificial intelligence leaning technologies and methodology in teaching and learning of English.

2. “AI for productive language skills”

This concept is founded on a view of AI as instruments and frameworks for building and enhancing the learners’ language output in communicated ITL with the emphasis on speaking and writing.

These concepts are potentially important for several reasons:

Personalized learning: AI can then sort each learner’s data so that it can relay back to the learner and adapt the instructions to the rate and the pattern of learning of the learner.

Increased efficiency: Thus, artificial intelligence appears useful to the teachers: machine can relieve several mundane chores and give the teachers’ time dedicated to the complex aspects of language learning.

Enhanced practice opportunities: AI can provide the learners with a lot of possibilities for the effective practice as due to the chatbots in the means of the productive skills the practice of speech recognition and the automated feedback to the written production.

How did this concepts challenge your previous understanding of English language teaching?

AI in ELT may shift the existing paradigm that teacher facilitated instructions and stereotyped language is unavoidable in order to enhance the teaching-learning process. It enshrined the idea that technology can, to some extent, interest itself in the act of teaching and testing. The old techniques of teaching conflicts with the possibility of delivering individualized learning to learners in mass. Lovely, using AI as a tool makes it easier to tailor the learning content to the different individual learners, which will be counter-intuitive to those who have been used to mass delivery of knowledge. The realization that AI is analyzing large volumes of data from the learners makes the traditional methods of evaluating students’ performance and designing lessons shift to data-oriented models. In this case it is proposed that, may be, the implementation of AI will shift the model of education from the teacher dominated monoto to the teacher as a facilitator or the source of knowledge.

How do you plan to apply these concepts in your Future teaching?

To apply AI in ELT, and use of AI for productive language skills in my future teaching should be planned as it can be one of the better strategies to enhance the instructional methods. For instance:

1. Start small and integrate gradually: Start testing its implementation in a limited manner and gradually expand it:

- Begin by integrating one or two AI tools into my classroom instructions.

- It is advisable to introduce the use of AI in classes progressively to increase people’s confidence.

2. Use AI writing assistants:

- About writing tools like, Grammarly to improve the standard of the writing of the students.

- Educate students on how to properly and safely use such tools while at the same time the students are maturing into these capabilities.

3. Implement AI-powered speaking practice:

- Use applications that use speech recognition (for instance, Elsa speak)

- Recommend to students that they can use the content of the lesson in dialogues for the practice of using AI chatbots as additional materials.

4. Utilize AI for personalized learning:

- Employ adaptive learning platforms that use AI to tailor content to individual student needs.

- Use the data these platforms provide to inform my teaching strategies.

CONCLUSION AND KEY LEARNINGS:

How will the knowledge gained from this module influence your teaching methods?

The knowledge gained from this module on AI in ELT and AI for productive language skills can significantly influence my teaching methods in several ways:

I may begin to add more learning by practicing and managing more particular procedures and feedback by utilizing an AI-based approach to better align with students’ learning styles. This could thus mean moving from the traditional setup of mass education to personalized approach of teaching whereby a teacher is associated with a number of students.

In planning lessons and the approaches to be employed in teaching, I may first use the discipline-specific AI-generate data. This could lead to better structure of measures needed to be taken and, as a consequence, to better understanding of the students’ progress.

Increased focus on productive skills: Paying more attention to productive skills since I might be utilizing some tools created in AI to practice in speaking and writing and I could spend relatively more amount of time on improving productive skills.

Can you think of a specific lesson or Activity where you could apply what you've learned?

Here are some practical activities where I can apply the concepts of AI in ELT and AI for productive language skills:

- Encourage students to use AI writing tools such as Grammarly, or Quillbot to type out and edit essays or reports. I believe the follow-up conversation could be based on how the AI suggestions helped enhance their writing.

- Use apps like ELSA Speak or Google’s Speech-to-Text for this as they will help sharpen your pronunciation skills. The application and software can capture students while speaking and provide feedback on the pronunciation instantly.

- Teach students to hold discussions with AI language (for example, ChatGPT) related to particular subjects. It enables students to analyse the conversations that they have in class and compare the way they use language as well as putting into consideration the cultural differences.

INCORPORATION OF CONTENT CREATED WITH AI:

Here I want to share what I created using "suno. Ai" about creating songs with educational purposes. For example, Here I share the link of a song composition about idioms and I really like how suno can help me to teach my students in a creative way because they can get fun and at the same time they are learning new vocabulary.
